The Arts are an integral part of Columbia’s Parks and Recreation program. From classes and shows to specials events, we sponsor a variety of activities. Steve Hewitt, Visual Arts Supervisor operates a program designed to provide activities for folks 6 - 90+ years old. The Arts Center serves as a hub for pottery enthusiasts as well as classes in jewelry making and sculpture. This facility is centrally located at 1932 Calhoun Street next to the Parks and Recreation Administration office.

 

 

Open Studio

Two month sessions $60 includes use of studio during all open hours, use of equipment (firings) and glazes. Fee does not include any instruction, and students must provide own tools. Clay is available for purchase. Hours of operation are: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights until 9 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.  Sessions are for ages 14 and older that have a prior course in pottery.  Maximum enrollment: 40

Session V/ September 1 - October 31

For those who want to register for a year in advance: Discount enrollment available.

Six sessions cost $360 if paid per session. Sign up for a year and save: costs reduced to $330 and $175 for 3 sessions. Fees can be pro-rated depending on your start date.

 

Introduction to Pottery 

  Students will make their own works using the coil method, slab method and the potter's wheel.  Basic instruction in glazing and the workings of the studio will be provided.
Dates: Monday evenings for six weeks, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

Pre-registration fee: $25

Fees for instruction: $50 does not cover cost of tools, clay provided

 

Intermediate Pottery

Students will meet with instructor to set up goals for course work.  Emphasis will be on increasing throwing skill, decoration techniques, and glazing techniques. Mondays/six weeks, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

YEARLY STUDIO RATE (register a year in advance) Discount enrollment: currently 6 sessions costs $360, if paid per session: reduced to $330/yearly: or $175/3 sessions (half - year rate.)

Pro-rated if you come in mid-session:     Fees can be pro-rated.

 


Backman Gallery Exhibition Schedule

The Arts Center operates an exhibition gallery named for Frank Backman -a beloved former employee who contributed to the construction of the facility. The gallery is host to exhibitions by current studio participants, local artists, and emerging student artists. The exhibits change every 4 - 6 weeks.
